Kissing spine sounds terrible and it can end your horse’s career by causing bucking or bolting under saddle which can be extremely dangerous to the rider.

You may ask is it a genetic defect? The answer is no. It is caused by the muscles being too tight along the topline of the horse from over compensations thus pulling the bones too close together which can fracture pieces off and also pinch nerves.

You ask what starts this? Every horse I have ever worked on— and this includes globally where I travel teaching— had one thing in common: both first ribs were misaligned, not allowing the shoulders to move freely and correctly.

The compensation of all this over-tightens the muscles pulling the bone, we have all had a muscle spasm deep in our back and you know how that can feel. I feel if we check our horses often from an early age all this can be prevented as we teach you how to release the first ribs in Level 1: Equine Musculoskeletal Unwinding, thus preventing the compensating effect.

Have you ever had or know of someone with a compressed disc in the lumbar area or neck area? Do you realize just how painful all this can be when trying to do athletic work under a saddle and carrying a rider’s weight

This leads to calcium buildup, resulting in calcification that can almost fuse the vertebrae in some areas.

Symptoms of Kissing Spine

The symptoms of kissing spine can vary, but some common signs to watch for include:

Back pain

Bucking

Attitude when being saddled, ridden, or touching the horse’s back

Nipping at the hind end or butt rubbing

Unable to engage from the hind end

Unable to collect

Heavy on the fore

Bunny hopping at the canter

Postural chances, most notably a “bump” on the spine

While only a veterinarian can provide an official diagnosis, you may notice these signs in your horse. Diagnosing kissing spine typically involves a clinical examination and imaging techniques like X-rays, ultrasound, or nerve blocks

But why Are These Vertebrae Rubbing Together?

To understand this, we need to look beyond the symptoms. Often, the root cause lies in the horse’s inability to move freely with its front legs and shoulders, often due to misalignment of one or both of the first ribs.

Over time, this restriction causes the horse to compensate by improperly using its lower back, pelvis, and hind limbs. This compensation tightens the psoas muscle, shortening the area around the lumbar spine and causing the vertebrae to rub together.

As the condition progresses, the pelvis can become unbalanced, restricting the movement of the sacrum. This imbalance can lead to symptoms like nipping at the hind end or rubbing it repeatedly. The horse’s body tries to compensate by tightening the hind-end muscles, leading to tension in the stifles, hocks, and lower leg tendons, which can cause additional issues like stiffness and soreness.

Managing Kissing Spine

What has worked very well for my clients is to get my basic bodywork protocol from either the hands-on class or my home study programand weekly make sure to check the 1st rib alignment.

Once this is staying in place and the shoulders can move freely then we add in my daily yoga for horses before and after riding. When done daily it can be as little as just 4 minutes a day. Many happy clients have reported back that new x-rays 3 months later the vet reported it showed no signs of kissing spine being present.

At Holistic Horseworks, we offer a holistic whole-body approach to horse care. By addressing the entire horse rather than just the affected area, our hands-on bodywork techniques have shown dramatic improvements in horses with kissing spine. These techniques include:

Horse’s hooves have to support the entire body. Hoof care must be the foundation for complete health care. In this episode, April discusses various hoof issues and effective solutions for maintaining healthy hooves. Whether you’re dealing with laminitis, foundered horses, or general hoof health, these insights can make a significant difference.

Bodily Detox and Nutrition, the Cornerstone of Hoof Health

The journey to healthy hooves begins with a thorough detox. Horses accumulate toxins from various sources like vaccinations and chemical wormers. A targeted detox regimen may help to alleviate this burden on their systems. By supporting the liver and kidneys, we can effectively remove heavy metals and poisons, laying the foundation for robust hoof health. It is also important to consider selecting a high-quality nutrition plan that is low in sugars and proteins, ensuring ease of digestion, especially for senior horses with limited chewing capacity. No matter what you feed your horse, they may not be able to assimilate it’s benefits without a good detox first.

Recommended Detox Regimen: Give 15 drops of Natural Cellular Defence (NCD) Liquid Zeolite 4 times a day on a non-sugary treat such as an apple or carrot.

Amazing Easy Hoof Soak Detox

When it comes to laminitis, foundered horses, and general hoof health, discover the transformative power of hoof soaks! By combining warm water with Epsom salt, and Dynamite Liquid Trace Minerals, this concoction not only aids in detoxification but also addresses issues such as bruising, inflammation, and bacterial/fungal infections. The frequency of hoof soaks may vary based on the specific needs of the horse and the severity of the hoof issues.

Recommended Regimen: Mix 32oz of warm water with 1 cup of Epsom salt, and 2 full droppers of Dynamite Liquid Trace Minerals in a shaker bottle. Put a UC Davis soaker boot on the horse and fill the boot with the solution. Let rest for 1 hour. Repeat 3 days in a row at least two times a year.

Holistic Horseworks Miracle Spray Recipe is a carefully formulated solution that goes beyond conventional hoof treatments, offering a two-pronged approach to hoof health. It not only addresses the physical conditions in the hoof such as infection and inflammation that leads to laminitis, foundering, and poor hoof health, but it also taps into the network of energy meridians. Each of the horse’s hooves is intricately connected to twelve key Ting points and associated meridians, impacting vital aspects such as heart, lung, digestion, and toxin elimination. By applying the Miracle Spray, you are nurturing not only the physical integrity of the hoof but also harmonizing the underlying energy systems. This holistic approach acknowledges the profound interplay between the physical and energetic dimensions, ensuring that the horse’s overall well-being is tended to.

Maybe there’s a weird discharge? These are telltale signs of equine uveitis, or, more simply said, inflammation of the eye.

If your vet has diagnosed your horse with uveitis, you might be offered traditional treatments like prescription eye medication or surgery. But don’t let this diagnosis make you feel helpless! With our simple, hands-on horse bodywork techniques, you can learn to prevent and improve this condition yourself. Not only will you be helping your beloved horse, but you’ll also save lots of money on repeated vet visits!

Understanding Equine Uveitis

Equine uveitis is an inflammatory menace that targets the uvea, the middle layer of your horse’s eye. Left untreated, it can cause severe discomfort, poor vision, and even complete vision loss. As a horse owner, understanding the causes, symptoms, strategies for prevention, and treatment options is essential to safeguarding your horse’s vision and health.

Symptoms of Equine Uveitis

Equine uveitis can present a range of symptoms, from mild discomfort to severe vision impairment. Keep an eye out for these telltale signs:

Eye Pain: Look for signs of discomfort, such as squinting, tearing, excessive blinking, or attempting to rub the eye.

Redness and Swelling: Inflammation in the affected eye can cause the conjunctiva’s redness and eyelids’ swelling.

Discharge: Eye discharge can vary in color and consistency. Sometimes, it may be thick and sticky, causing the eyelids to stick together.

Cloudiness: The cornea or the inside of the eye may appear cloudy due to inflammation.

Sensitivity to Light: Your horse may react to or avoid bright light, indicating photophobia.

Vision Changes: In severe cases, you might notice impaired vision or even signs of blindness.

Here’s something else to watch out for: If your horse has uveitis, they may start rubbing their head on their foreleg to scratch the eye and relieve irritation or discomfort. But as your horse rubs their eye, they may get fly spray or other chemicals in it, leading to even more inflammation and pain. This creates a vicious cycle of increasing discomfort and worsening symptoms.

An official diagnosis can only be made by a veterinarian, but you may notice these symptoms as indicators of uveitis in your horse. Officially diagnosing uveitis typically involves a combination of physical and ophthalmic examinations, lab work, and possibly ultrasound imaging

What Causes Equine Uveitis?

Traditional veterinary medicine identifies several factors that can lead to the development of uveitis in horses. Here are some common contributors:

Infectious Agents: Bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections can trigger an immune response that leads to uveitis. A notable example is leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that often causes this condition.

Trauma: Physical injury to the eye can result in inflammation and subsequent uveitis.

Genetics: Some horse breeds, like Appaloosas, are genetically predisposed to developing uveitis.

While conventional veterinary medicine cites these causes of uveitis, we often find that head trauma is a significant, yet overlooked, culprit.

Head trauma usually happens when a horse pulls back while tied. But why would this lead to weepy, inflamed, and red eyes? Good question!

We’ve all seen it: your horse is tied to a rail or trailer, something startles them, and they suddenly pull back in a panic. Their “fight or flight” response kicks in, and before you know it, the horse is reacting instinctively, trying to flee from the perceived danger and struggling to get free from whatever they are tied to.

As the panic escalates, the horse pulls against the tie, causing the halter to pull down on the occiput (the knobby part at the top of the skull). This pulls the occipital area down and forward, creating compression and flattening the area.

As the horse pulls harder, it can twist its head to one side, resulting in uneven pressure and more compression on one side of the skull. This intense pressure affects all the cranial and facial bones: the occipital, parietal, frontal, nasal, temporal, and especially the lacrimal (cheekbone).

When the lacrimal bone is compressed, it jams and obstructs the lacrimal duct (tear duct), preventing proper drainage. This leads to a clogged duct, causing swelling above and below the eye, discharge, and redness: uveitis.

Looking at the issue from a whole-body perspective, we can understand how cranial compression could be a common cause of uveitis.

Symptoms of Head Trauma in Combination with Uveitis

Very often uveitis goes hand-in-hand with head trauma. Is your horse experiencing any of these other problems simultaneously as uveitis?

Frequent spooking

Head-shaking

Struggling to turn smoothly

Resisting the halter or bridle

Difficult to bit

These behaviors can be more than just quirks—they might be symptoms of head trauma which can lead to uveitis as a result!

Preventing or Recovering From Equine Uveitis and Head Trauma

Traditional treatment for uveitis can range from the use of anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics or antifungals, Atropine, or, in severe cases, surgery.

If your horse is being prescribed eye medication, here is a video on how to administer the eye medication easily.

At Holistic Horseworks, our alternative, holistic whole-body approach to horse care shows you address the root cause of uveitis— cranial compression— rather than focusing solely on the symptoms. Learning this approach may help your horse recover from or prevent this condition.

In the photo below, this five-year-old horse was diagnosed with uveitis and scheduled to have its eye surgically removed. Before a session, the eye was puffy, swollen, weepy, and red. After just one hour of bodywork, the eye vastly improved. During the next vet exam, the vet no longer recommended removing the eye!

Through manual manipulation of bones like the lacrimal bone near the eye,we have seen many horses find relief from chronic and acute uveitis.

Because it requires sensitive manual manipulation of the cranial bones, Equine Cranial Decompression is only available to learn in person at a hands-on clinic. This is level 3 of the Holistic Horseworks Program, and the final step in releasing the horse’s skull and restoring their entire body to proper balance, form, and function. Enrollment requires completion of Level 1: Equine Musculoskeletal Unwinding andLevel 2: Cranio Sacral Unwinding and Advanced Applied Kinesiology.

This spray helps open up blood flow and get things moving when working on a horse’s cranial bones and structures.

Apply the Release spray liberally over the horse’s head. The spray helps open things up and prepare the area for manual adjustments to the cranial bones. Using the Release spray can help speed up the results when doing cranial sacral work on a horse. By improving blood flow and circulation to the head, the spray supports the healing and rebalancing of the cranial structures.

Dynamite’s Release spray is an all-natural, topical product that combines flower essences and other natural ingredients to ‘release’ areas of the body experiencing inflammation, swelling, pain, etc.

Join us in this episode of Holistic Horseworks Talks with April Love as we explore the often-overlooked significance of the first mobility rib in equine anatomy. She sheds light on how misalignments of the first rib can lead to various issues with people such as thoracic outlet syndrome, frozen shoulder, tendonitis, bursitis, and carpel tunnel syndrome. So think about all the things it could be impeding your horse’s freedom of movement in the front end. This is what starts the high-low hoof syndrome, horse not picking up right or left lead, mysterious lameness, kissing spine, behavioral issues, and even roaring in horses requiring expensive tie-back surgery.

It’s All Connected

In the world of equine care, ensuring your horse’s well-being goes beyond just basic management. Holistic approaches to horse care have gained traction, highlighting the interconnectedness of various factors that contribute to a horse’s overall health and performance. One crucial element that often goes unnoticed but plays a pivotal role in equine wellness is the first rib. Let’s delve into the significance of the first rib, its alignment, and how it affects a horse’s movement and overall health.

What is the First Rib? What does it do?

To comprehend the importance of the first rib, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of equine anatomy. Similar to human skeletons, horses have a first rib located beneath the point of the shoulder. This rib serves as a critical connection point for various muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support the horse’s body and movement. As such, it plays a key role in the horse’s overall biomechanics, movement, and balance. When misaligned, it can lead to a cascade of issues that impact a horse’s performance, comfort, and well-being.

What Causes First Rib Misalignment in Horses?

Numerous factors can lead to the misalignment of a horse’s first rib. These include activities such as running through uneven terrain, slipping in mud, or experiencing sudden jolts, such as pulling a shoe or stopping abruptly. These actions can cause the first rib to become misaligned, resulting in potential imbalances and compensatory movements. Nutrition also plays a role in maintaining healthy musculoskeletal function, but unfortunately, today most hays and grains that we feed ar horses are mineral deficient which is a result of monocropping, mass production, and chemical additives used for growing.

What are the implications of a first rib misalignment?

Breathing Issues: A misaligned first rib can lead to thoracic outlet impingement, which can affect a horse’s ability to breathe properly. This can result in reduced lung capacity, limited oxygen intake, and overall discomfort for the horse. This can result in issues such as roaring.

Abnormal Gait and Lameness: The misalignment of the first rib can disrupt the horse’s biomechanics, leading to uneven movement patterns and compromised gait. This can impact the horse’s overall performance, making it difficult to perform tasks such as turning, stopping, and transitioning between gaits. Horses with a misaligned first rib may also exhibit gait irregularities, such as choppy or stiff movement. These irregularities can affect their overall performance and potentially lead to lameness.

Muscle Strain and Chronic Pain: A misaligned first rib can cause compensatory movements, leading to strain in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This strain can result in discomfort, pain, and even injuries over time. If left unaddressed, the misalignment can lead to chronic pain and discomfort for the horse. Chronic pain can affect the horse’s quality of life, behavior, and overall disposition.

Roach Back or Hunter’s Bump: A misaligned first rib can lead to postural changes, including a roached back or other abnormalities in the horse’s spine. This is a result of the horse not being able to move comfortably or freely and overcompensating with other areas of the body, which often cascades to the hind end and a contraction of the psoas muscle.

Poor Performance: A horse with a misaligned first rib may struggle to perform at its full potential due to compromised biomechanics, discomfort, and restricted movement. This can impact various disciplines, from racing and jumping to dressage and trail riding.

How to tell if the first rib is misaligned on your horse

Keep an eye out for gait irregularities, such as choppy or stiff movements, as well as performance limitations that may manifest as difficulty turning, stopping, or transitioning between gaits. Additionally, watch for breathing difficulties, including changes in breathing patterns and potentially, the occurrence of roaring. Look for postural changes, such as a roached back or abnormal spine alignment, and pay attention to signs of discomfort, chronic pain, or tension in the horse’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments. If you notice changes in behavior, reluctance to perform certain movements, especially in the front end, or diminished athletic abilities, these could also be indicators of a misaligned first rib. Regularly assessing these signs and performing evaluations and adjustments can help ensure the horse’s overall health and performance.

How to realign your horse’s first rib

Re-aligning a horse’s first rib is easier than it sounds, and you can do it yourself with the help of a friend! The trick is performing a certain technique that encourages the horse voluntarily performs a specific movement that naturally drops back into alignment without causing discomfort or harm to the horse. In the long term, it’s also important to address potential mineral deficiencies, detoxification, and proper nutrition to support your horse’s overall well-being and assist in maintaining the alignment of the first rib.

The Importance of Emotional Well-Being in Horses

Traditionally, the focus of equine care has been largely centered on physical health—ensuring proper nutrition, exercise, and medical attention. However, a growing understanding of the link between emotions and physical well-being is reshaping how we approach horse care.

By addressing emotional imbalances alongside physical health, horse owners and caretakers can offer a comprehensive approach to improving well-being. This approach may involve various techniques to help horses release trapped emotions and find emotional equilibrium, including more quality time, bodywork, energy work, aromatherapy, acupressure, and more. These methods aim to restore emotional balance and create an environment of relaxation, trust, and healing for the horse.

The Role of Trapped Emotions

Just like humans, horses experience a range of emotions, from joy and contentment to fear and anxiety. These emotions aren’t just abstract concepts; they can manifest in physical tension, behavior changes, and even health issues. This connection between emotions and health is particularly evident in horses. For instance, stress or anxiety can lead to the release of adrenaline, affecting heart rate, digestion, and overall comfort.

Emotions that aren’t processed or released can become trapped within a horse’s body. These trapped emotions may stem from past traumas, negative experiences, or simply the challenges of everyday life. Over time, these emotions can contribute to physical discomfort, behavioral problems, and a decreased quality of life.

For example, a horse that has experienced a traumatic event might develop behavioral issues such as restlessness, aggression, or resistance during training. These behaviors can be traced back to the horse’s emotional state and their attempts to cope with unprocessed emotions.

Recommended Resource: One book I always recommend to people who take our programs is “The Emotion Code” by Dr. Bradley Nelson. This book provides excellent insights into the connection between emotions and physical health, both in humans and animals.

Healing for Horse and Owner

Horses are incredibly sensitive beings, attuned to the emotions and energies of those around them. As empathetic creatures, horses can mirror and absorb the emotions of their owners, often taking on their caregivers’ stress, anxiety, or even unresolved emotional baggage. Similarly, horse owners, too, can inadvertently pick up on their horse’s emotions, internalizing their equine companion’s feelings. This dynamic exchange can create a deep connection but also potentially lead to emotional imbalances for both.

Recognizing this interplay is an important part of emotional healing for horses. By addressing our own emotional wounds, we create a positive ripple effect. Our healing journey not only benefits us but also translates into a more balanced partnership with our equine friends. As we release our own emotional blockages, we provide our horses with a safe space to heal and thrive, fostering an environment of mutual well-being and emotional resonance.

And I know you’ve heard it before, but you can’t fill from an empty cup. If your own energetic reserves are running on empty, you can’t be expected to effectively help your horse. Part of a truly holistic approach to horse care involves caring for yourself so you can care for them!

Releasing Stuck and Stagnant Energy

Concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) add a unique perspective and a new depth of practice when it comes to equine care. In TCM, both horse and human bodies have Meridians, or energetic pathways, that flow through the body, serving as channels to circulate life force and connecting the various organ systems that interplay with each other and affect total well-being. By working with these subtle energy channels, practitioners can facilitate the free flow of energy, promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Techniques such as acupressure, acupuncture, and Reiki focus on stimulating or clearing meridian points to harmonize the body’s energy and promote balance. As sensitive and sentient beings, horses respond remarkably well to these therapies.

The Journey of Sensitive Development

Now, it’s time to address skepticism and hesitations: Does this work? Our answer is just to try it! We’ve seen an emotionally centered approach to healing work wonders for thousands of horses and horse owners who try the Holistic Horseworks program. Time and time again.

So many people are closed off to their own emotions, that it can be difficult to not only address but also accept emotional healing as a helpful modality for horses. But we all have to start somewhere, and it’s all part of the journey.

You might also be wondering if you’re cut out for this type of work. I recall a time when I first started doing this kind of work with horses and was told that I flat-out wasn’t sensitive enough! Instead of giving up, I persevered, and this dedication led to the foundation of an incredible business and program helping others to learn how to do the same.

I encourage you to embrace this journey and gradually open up to your own intuitive and energetic capabilities that are just waiting to be tapped! The worst thing you can do is not even try.

Creating a Balanced Environment for Horses and Humans

By integrating emotional healing practices into your equine care routine, you can create a harmonious and balanced environment for both you and your horse. The emotional component in their care promotes more effective postures and ensures that their emotional health is reestablished along with their physical well-being. Releasing negative emotions and stagnant energies from horse owners enables their horses to enjoy better physical and mental health and even more happiness. This helps to create an incredible intimacy between the horse and the human.

In conclusion, caring for your horse’s emotional health is just as vital as addressing their physical needs. By taking a holistic approach that considers both, you can help your horse lead a healthier, happier life—and in the process, enrich your own.
